Engaging the Millennial and Gen Z Workforce: 4 Ways to Evolve Traditional Training into Modern Practices
October 24, 2023

The modern workplace has been undergoing a significant transformation for several years, fueled in part by the entrance of millennials and Gen Z employees. As these generations comprise an ever-increasing percentage of the workforce, it’s crucial for compliance officers to adapt training programs to resonate with and engage these employees who have grown up in the digital age.

Strategies for Engaging Millennial and Gen Z Employees:
  1. Account for Different Learning Styles by Embracing Technology
Millennial and Gen Z employees have grown up in a digital era. Their comfort and familiarity with technology mean they often gravitate towards online and interactive learning. Traditional classroom-style training sessions or lengthy written manuals may not engage them as effectively. Utilizing e-learning platforms that offer interactive modules and consider incorporating videos, infographics, and quizzes. Platforms that support mobile learning are especially relevant given the ubiquity of smartphones among younger employees.

  2. Shorter Attention Spans Means Microlearning is Key
With the proliferation of smartphones, social media, and a 24/7 news cycle, younger generations are used to consuming information in shorter, bite-sized chunks. Compliance training should reflect this shift in information consumption. Instead of lengthy training sessions, break down content into shorter, more manageable modules. This approach allows employees to learn at their own pace.
  3. Training Should Provide Purpose, Not Just Policy
Both millennials and Gen Z are known for their desire to work for companies that align with their personal values. Clearly explaining the “why” behind compliance rules can help them see the greater purpose and increase their commitment. Incorporating real-world examples and scenarios into your training not only makes the content relatable, but also aids in the practical application of the knowledge. Additionally, clearly communicating compliance in relationship to the company’s mission and values can highlight the tangible benefits, such as safer workplaces, ethical practices, or even financial gains.

  4. Promote Feedback and Interactivity
These generations value feedback and interactivity. Gamified training modules or platforms that allow real-time feedback can increase engagement. Other ways to accomplish this are to consider incorporating group discussions, role-playing, or team projects into your compliance program, as well as tools to gather feedback after the training. Use surveys, feedback forms, or even one-on-one discussions to understand what resonates with the employees and what doesn’t. This iterative feedback process will help refine future training sessions.

Compliance training is not just about ticking boxes; it’s about ensuring that employees understand and adhere to critical regulations and standards. For this training to be effective with millennials and Gen Z employees, it needs to resonate with their values, learning styles, and technological inclinations. By adapting and updating training methods, compliance officers can ensure that these younger generations are not only informed but also genuinely engaged in the compliance journey.
